I was super psyched for this book because IΒ loveΒ Scheherazade andΒ Arabian NightsΒ and retellings of those tales. I was not disappointed byΒ The Wrath and the DawnΒ by Renee Ahdieh. Ahdieh writes an enchanting tale as captivating as one straight from Sharzadβs own mouth!
The Quick Catch-Up: Every day the king takes a new wife and every morning, his wife is beheaded. When Sharzadβs (βShaziβ) best friend is taken, Shazi vows to have revenge, so she volunteers to become the kingβs wife. But Shazi finds that things may not be exactly as they seem and that there is much more to the young king than she could have ever imagined.
So this is a bit of a slow read, but in the best way possible. It is a luxurious story readers will want to spend days in! Ahdiehβs writing is so lyrical and beautifulβ¦Ahdieh casts a spell with every word she writes!
The characters in this story are justΒ so rich! I love Shazi! Sheβs so fierce, loyal, and intelligent. She stands by her beliefs but knows when to question what sheβs told. She is such a great character and role model! The supporting characters were amazing too! I enjoyed how the point of view (POV) changed, allowing each character to be given much more depth and motive. Tariq and Khalid were such sympathetic βvillainsβ and love interests, in each of their turns! All of the characterβs stories were woven together so brilliantly!
The world building was excellent as well! Ahdieh does a perfect job showing what type of society Shazi lives in. Another thing that I loved were the subtle hints of magic that Ahdieh added! They were spare enough to add a bit of mystery, while not overwhelming the main story! I canβt wait to see that world expanded upon.
The plot of The Wrath and the Dawn was so intricately and expertly woven! Ahdieh brings all of the stories and motives together so excellently! The story leaves you wanting to know so much more!
The Bottom Line: Overall, The Wrath and the Dawn was an incredible read! Buy it, get it, you most definitely wonβt regret it!
I’ve always seen this book on Twitter, and somehow, it puzzled me why everyone seems to love it. For some weird reason, I never really got the chance to check it out on Goodreads/read a review until today. So now that I’ve found your review, I finally got the chance to understand the feels of my Twitter friends. π
