Scientists have been trying for years now to discover what causes the infamous reading slump. Is it reading a bad book? Reading a good book? Is it some sort of karmic punishment? WHY?? Why do bad things happen to good people???
Needless to say, scientists have yet to find the cause of such disturbing occurrences. While I can’t tell you what causes a reading slump, or how to fully cure one, have no fear! I do have some tips to help you along during a reading slump and that have helped me get out of reading slumps. So here they are!
1) Don’t Force Yourself To Read
Forcing yourself to read can cause you to not enjoy a book that you otherwise would, just because you’re not in the mood. Plus, forcing yourself to read can also leave you at risk of prolonging your reading slump. The key isn’t forcing yourself to enjoy reading again, but rather “resparking” your interest in reading.
2) Take A Break/Time For That Netflix Marathon
Sometimes you’ve just read too much for too long (I know, I know, it seems unlikely but hear me out), your brain’s kinda fried, and you’ve got to take a break. Try watching a show on TV, Netflix, or Hulu or doing something aside from reading that you love, then come back and try again.
3) Read A Short Story or Novella
Novellas and short stories are, well, short. They don’t require a major input of energy, effort, or time. Generally they have just enough story to pique your interest and have you wanting more packed into a few pages!
4) Reread An Old Favorite
Sometimes rereading something you love can spark your interest in reading at large.
So those are my thought on how to combat a reading slump. I hope it helped you! What are some of your tips and tricks to combat a reading slump?
