the wonderful world of webcomics | my favorite webcomics to introduce you to the format
Hello again, dear friends! I hope you are happy, healthy, and safe, and if not, I hope brighter days head your way soon!
Y’all know I’ve been in a vicious reading slump for the last three years (*cue sobbing*). Nevertheless, during this period I have found one variety of literature that I’ve been able to absolutely devour despite my slump: webcomics!
Many of y’all might be familiar with the popular webcomic distributor Webtoon, but I’ve also found great webcomics on sites such as Tumblr and Tapas, as well as on artists’ self hosted websites! There are so many AMAZING webcomics out there featuring INCREDIBLE art and OUTSTANDING storytelling which are created by astonishingly talented artists and writers, and I encourage you to branch out beyond Webtoon if you find that you’re a fan of the format! Anyhoo, that was a bit of a tangent, let’s get back to the point 😅
What I was saying was that webcomics have been my salvation during my book slump. They’re typically really easy to read because their “chapters” of sorts are quite short. But don’t let that lack of length fool you—webcomic chapters still manage to pack a punch! Plus a good webcomic can convey as much through its art as it does through its writing, which is quite a feat in my opinion!
So, today I’d like to share some of my favorite webcomics that I think are perfect for newcomers to the format! Let’s dive right in!
RESOURCES TO HELP CHANGE THE WORLD
Before anything: FREE PALESTINE!!! 🍉 For over half a century now, the Israeli government has been enacting a genocide against the Palestinian people. This is more than something that started on October 7, 2023. It’s not complicated. It’s genocide. And it’s important that we witness, raise our voices, protest, and fight against it in any way possible. Below are a list of resources to help educate yourself on Palestine, as well as to donate to aid the Palestinian people. In addition, I’ve added some Palestinian influencers and journalists you can follow to learn more from and who keep track of what’s going on. Peace to all and keep fighting the good fight!

Ahhh, my latest obsession!!! This webcomic somehow manages to perfectly tread the line between cozy and mysterious, and I never thought that would be just the thing I need but it is! I honestly think this webcomic is a great starting point for those unfamiliar with the format. Morgana and Oz is all about a witch who befriends a vampire from a vampire clan that’s at odds with her family. Eventually the unlikely pair must also work out some mysteries involving the witch’s family and the vampire clan. It’s a relatively easy read with a fast-paced plot, lovable characters, and a colorful world.
Purple Hyacinth by Ephemerys and Sophism

Purple Hyacinth is on Webtoon
This is yet another webcomic I’m super obsessed with (thanks to my fellow book blogger Ritz)! A fast paced, action packed fantasy thriller with a hint of angsty enemies-to-lovers romance, Purple Hyacinth really has got it all! It’s the story of a cop who can magically detect lies and an infamous assassin who team up to take down a terrorist organization from both the inside and the outside. If you’re looking for something that’ll hook you and keep you reading and reading and begging for more, Purple Hyacinth is the webcomic for you!
Clara and the Devil by Olivie Blake and Little Chmura

Readers may be wondering, so I’ll answer: yes, this is written by THE Olivie Blake, of The Atlas Six fame. And she’s teamed up with the illustrator of all of her novels, Little Chmura, to create this GORGEOUS dark academia magical realism webcomic! I will caution, though, this webcomic isn’t for everyone. It definitely has Blake’s signature atmospheric ✨vibes✨ but it’s also very slow and is more of a slice-of-life feeling story, which I know isn’t everyone’s thing. Anyhoo, Clara and The Devil is about several college students (including the titular Clara) and their brushes with The Devil. If you want a rich, vibe-y story, give this one a chance!
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

Okay, technically I read the graphic novel bind-ups of this webcomic, but that said, it is available in entirety for free online in webcomic format. Anyhoo, if you’re looking for an adorable contemporary romance that’s YA but is also a great read regardless of your age, then look no further than Heartstopper! The series follows Nick and Charlie, who are two teenage British boys who fall for each other, plus their friends, most of whom are members of the LGBT+ community. It’s an achingly sweet and cute story, although there are some serious parts (heads up: trigger warning for eating disorders), and it’s so worth the read! Definitely check this one out!!
Made of Stardust by Kalisami

This is a webcomic I just recently started, but it’s really good and I think it’d also be a great starting point for people who are new to the webcomic format. Made of Stardust is about Kalisa, a star (like, from the heavens above) who is captured by a prince, but who escapes her imprisonment and is on the run whilst also trying to break a mysterious curse that’s been placed on her. There are lots of cute and amazing magical creatures in the story too, so that’s a bonus! The art for this webcomic is also really gorgeous and the story’s atmosphere is very ethereal and fairy tale-esque. The bottom line is Made of Stardust is a great webcomic to try, whether or not you’re new to the format!
Realta by Rachel Eaton

Realta is another webcomic which I think is perfect for beginners! It’s set in this fantasy world based around Western astrology, and it’s very cool! It stars a member of the Virgo tribe who’s been isolated from society and doesn’t realize that they’re the last Virgo in existence until they come into contact with society. It’s a very mysterious and slightly cozy read, and it’s really easy to get into!
