Hey y’all! Lila here! So you may or may not have noticed, but I’ve been in a horrific reading and blogging slump since about mid June. These slumps were brought on by a number of factors including, but not limited to: school, work, my health, lack of inspiration, and my country completely falling apart at the seams. But anyhoo! Having been in these slumps for a good while now, I’ve become a bit of an expert on what to do while in a slump. Today I wanted to share a few of those ideas with y’all, particularly in regards to what to do while you’re in a blogging slump.
1. Don’t stop reading
I think one of the things that can really contribute too a reading and blogging slump is getting in a rut where you feel like you’re just reading so that you can write blog posts. That’s why I think it’s so important when you’re in a blogging slump to keep reading and to read for enjoyment. In doing this, you can kinda remind yourself of why you started book blogging and why your so passionate about it–because of the books! When you remind yourself of why you were so passionate about something in the first place, generally you can recapture that passion and fall in love with that thing again!
2. Invest in your other hobbies
Don’t be afraid to take time to enjoy hobbies other than reading and blogging. In doing so, you might even gain fodder for blog posts. Sure, you may be running a book blog, but don’t be afraid to show off other facets of yourself on it. After all, an unrelated blog post is better than no blog post at all. But aside from that, taking time to enjoy other hobbies also gives your mind some time to rest, relax, and recuperate. This ensures you’ll be back to blogging as soon as possible and you’ll be in the right mindset when that time comes!
3. Find inspiration in your day to day life
Some of my best posts (in my humble opinion) were and are inspired by real life topics and experiences. All you gotta do is always be on the look out for inspiration. And you don’t have to write diary-style posts about your daily life! You can easily take something from your daily life and tweak it a little to be a bookish post! Doing your makeup for the day? Create a Book Look inspired by your favorite series or jot down several makeup looks you’d give your fave heroines (–or heroes–I don’t discriminate)! You get the idea, right?
4. Take inspiration from bloggers you admire
You know what Auston Kleon always says–“steal like and artist!” Now, I’m not saying take someone else’s post and call it your own, obviously that’s wrong! But if you see someone else make a post you like, try and take that idea and put your own original spin on it.
5. Consume media other than books
Binge your to-watch list on Netflix. Discover new tunes on Spotify. Find awesome artists on Tumblr. My point is: enjoy some other types of media aside from books. Just give yourself a break, let your mind rest and relax, then, when you’ve regained your strength and you’re all good and ready, you can come back! That’s first of all. Second of all, consuming other media is a good way to come up with post ideas. Maybe you post about that media. Or maybe you pair that media or elements of that media with books. However you spin it, consuming other types of media can be a great source of inspiration which also allows you to take a break and relax.
